Research overview

Introduction

A 2025 peer-reviewed scoping review published in the most highly valued Journal of Hand Therapy (Q1, Elsevier) examined 41 studies on gaming interventions for upper extremity (UE) rehabilitation in musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. Led by top researchers from the University of Western Ontario and the Roth McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre, the review highlights Smart PLAYBALL as one of the clinically studied and commercially available technologies.

Smart PLAYBALL evaluation

Among the technologies reviewed, PLAYBALL was directly used in studies evaluating shoulderpathologies including impingement syndrome, capsulitis, and degenerative tendon conditions. Inthese studies, PLAYBALL was used to assess strength, joint mobility, muscle strength, andengagement levels.

Conclusion

The review concluded that gaming technologies like PLAYBALL are not only clinically effective in improving joint mobility and muscle power but also enhance patient motivation, adherence, and satisfaction, offering real-time feedback that supports neuromuscular recovery all while encourages efficient independent use by patients.

“Gaming technology has a positive effect on pain relief, joint mobility, and motor functions among people with chronic MSK conditions.” (George et al., 2025)
“Gaming technology’s tracking capabilities could allow clinicians to remotely assess patient adherence and effectiveness, offering an alternative to in-person sessions and increasing access to therapy for patients”. (George et al., 2025)

A standout finding from the PLAYBALL-specific study noted:

Rehabilitation with PLAYBALL not only proved its clinical effectiveness, but also promoted greater self-efficacy and a stronger intention to maintain physical activity, driven by higher levels

of enjoyment and engagement.

“The study showed that higher enjoyment during rehabilitation with PLAYBALL® was associated with increased self-efficacy and a stronger intention to continue exercising independently after the program.” (Rizzato et al., 2023, Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation)
